About
Jordan

Jordan is a Middle Eastern nation bordered by Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Israel and the Palestinian territories. Known as the Hashemite Kingdom, it is one of the most politically stable countries in a turbulent region and has emerged as a growing footballing power in Asia.

Jordan’s football culture has surged over the past decade. The country’s rise from regional aspirant to World Cup qualifier is the story of patient investment, tactical discipline, and a generation of players stepping up on the biggest stage. The national team — nicknamed Al-Nashama (The Chivalrous Ones) — captured the imagination of all Arab football fans with their stunning run to the 2023 AFC Asian Cup final, and then cemented their legacy with first-ever World Cup qualification on 5 June 2025.

Football in Jordan is governed by the Jordan Football Association, affiliated with FIFA since 1956 and the Asian Football Confederation. Their primary home ground is Amman International Stadium, a 25,000-capacity venue in the capital, with King Abdullah II Stadium also in regular use.

History &
Qualification

From their first international in 1953 to a World Cup berth in 2025 — this is how Al-Nashama rose through the ranks of world football.

1953
Jordan plays their first ever international match in Egypt, losing 3–1 to Syria. The foundations of a footballing nation are quietly laid.
1956
Jordan becomes a full FIFA member and joins the Asian Football Confederation, opening the door to international competition at all levels.
1986
Jordan participates in their first FIFA World Cup qualification campaign — for the Mexico 1986 tournament — though they do not advance. The appetite for a World Cup berth is firmly established.
1997–1999
Coach Mohammad Awad leads Jordan to back-to-back Arab Games gold medals — Beirut 1997 and Amman 1999 — delivering the country’s first major international trophies and igniting domestic football passion.
2004
Jordan qualify for the AFC Asian Cup for the first time and reach the quarter-finals — a watershed moment signalling the team’s growing competitiveness in continental football.
2011
Second AFC Asian Cup appearance. Jordan reach the quarter-finals again before a narrow 2–1 defeat to Uzbekistan. The team’s consistency at Asian Cup level is now undeniable.
2023–24
Under coach Hussein Ammouta, Jordan produce their greatest continental run — defeating Iraq, Tajikistan and South Korea 2–0 in the AFC Asian Cup knockout stages to reach the FINAL. They lose 3–1 to hosts Qatar but their FIFA ranking soars to 70th, a decade-high.
June 2024
Ammouta departs for family reasons. Moroccan tactician Jamal Sellami signs a three-year contract, bringing proven coaching credentials from the Moroccan league and the 2018 African Nations Championship.
5 June 2025
🎉 HISTORIC MOMENT: Jordan secure their first-ever FIFA World Cup berth with a stunning 3–0 away victory over Oman, finishing second in AFC Group B behind South Korea. A nation erupts in celebration.
Dec 2025
Jordan reach the FIFA Arab Cup Final, defeating Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Egypt along the way before losing 3–2 to Morocco in the final. Sellami is granted Jordanian citizenship by HM King Abdullah II.
AFC Round 2
Jordan top their group ahead of Saudi Arabia and other Asian rivals, demonstrating the organisational structure that Sellami’s side had built.
Group Winners
AFC Round 3
Placed in Group B alongside South Korea, Kuwait, Palestine, Oman and Iraq. Over 10 matches Jordan go W4 D4 L2 — 16 points, finishing 2nd behind South Korea.
2nd Place
Playoff
Drawn against Palestine. Jordan win the two-legged tie 3–1 on aggregate to secure direct qualification — the most historic result in Jordan football history.

Head Coach

JS
Jamal Sellami
Head Coach · Appointed June 22, 2024

Jamal Sellami is the Moroccan tactician who made history by becoming the first man to lead Jordan to the FIFA World Cup finals — and the first to do so in his debut job outside Moroccan football. The 55-year-old former midfielder, who won the 2018 African Nations Championship with Morocco, spent most of his playing career in Casablanca. His coaching CV includes a successful spell at Raja Casablanca where he won the CAF Confederation Cup.

Sellami’s tactical philosophy is built on defensive discipline, compact shape and rapid transitions. He has transformed Jordan into a side that is incredibly difficult to beat while also carrying a real threat on the break. His work earned him Jordanian citizenship — personally granted by His Majesty King Abdullah II — after the Arab Cup final in December 2025.

Al-Taamari
Winger / Captain · Rennes, Ligue 1

The captain and creative heartbeat of Jordan’s team, Musa Al-Taamari is the first Jordanian to play in Ligue 1 and his country’s most accomplished attacker. He is the embodiment of Jordan’s football rise — technically brilliant, relentlessly direct, and capable of moments of genuine world-class quality. Al-Taamari’s winning goal against South Korea in the 2024 AFC Asian Cup semi-final — an iconic moment in Jordan football history — announced him to the world. At Rennes, he has proved himself against Europe’s elite. His link-up play with Yazan Al-Naimat gives Jordan’s attack a dynamism that can trouble any defence in the world.

Attacking Tactics

Jordan’s attack is built around speed, directness and the individual brilliance of Al-Taamari. The system prioritises rapid transitions — winning the ball deep and exploiting space quickly before opponents can reorganise.

  • Counter-attack at pace through Al-Taamari and Al-Naimat on the wings, stretching defences wide
  • Direct vertical passes to find the forward quickly after winning possession
  • Set-piece delivery as a genuine weapon — Jordan score a significant number of goals from dead-ball situations
  • The No.10 zone (Al-Taamari) operates with freedom to drift inside and combine, creating 2v1 situations in half-spaces
  • Patience in possession when ahead; willingness to drop deep and absorb pressure before transitioning
Defensive Tactics

Defensively, Sellami’s Jordan are organised, compact and disciplined. The team is designed to be difficult to break down, forcing opponents wide and limiting central space. They defend with the entire team — a true collective effort.

  • Mid-block defensive structure — sitting between the lines at 4–4–2 shape when out of possession
  • Double pivot of Ayed and Abu Taha screens the back four, breaking up play before it reaches danger zones
  • Wide midfielders press back quickly, maintaining compactness and denying crossing lanes
  • Yazan Al-Arab at centre-back provides commanding leadership — experienced and vocal across the defensive line
  • Ability to hold a lead — Jordan went five matches unbeaten in the Arab Cup conceding only two goals in open play

Strengths &
Weaknesses

Strengths
World-Class Wide ThreatMusa Al-Taamari is a genuine Ligue 1-quality winger capable of changing any game at this level. His pace, technique and big-game mentality give Jordan an attacking dimension that few Group J opponents will have accounted for.
Defensive OrganisationJordan have proven they can frustrate elite Asian sides. Their compact, organised block is built on clear principles — difficult to play through, disciplined in shape, and strong on set-pieces at both ends.
Mental Strength & TogethernessThe squad has forged an exceptional team spirit — evidenced by late winners against Iraq and dramatic knockouts of South Korea in the 2023 Asian Cup. They don’t give up and have a strong collective identity.
Tactical ClarityUnder Sellami, Jordan know exactly what they are. No confusion about roles or system — every player understands their job, which makes them hard to disorganise even against technically superior opponents.
Set-Piece ProwessJordan score a disproportionate number of goals from set-pieces — corners, free kicks and long throws. In tight tournament football, this can be decisive against any opponent.
Weaknesses
Limited European ExposureOnly two players (Al-Taamari at Rennes and Sabra at Lokomotiva Zagreb) play their club football in Europe. The majority of the squad is from the Jordanian Pro League — a significant step below the level of their World Cup opponents’ leagues.
Midfield Depth & QualityJordan’s midfield engine room lacks genuine international-class options beyond the starting two. Against the physicality and technical quality of Europe’s best midfields, they may struggle to control possession for sustained periods.
Dependence on Al-TaamariThe team’s best attacking ideas flow through one player. If Al-Taamari is neutralised, injured, or off form, Jordan’s creative output drops significantly. World Cup opponents will target him specifically.
World Cup InexperienceBy definition, no Jordanian player has ever played at a World Cup before. The physical and mental intensity of the tournament — its pace, noise, and pressure — will be entirely new and may affect performance early on.
Finishing EfficiencyJordan can create chances, but converting them at the highest level remains an area for improvement. In the Arab Cup final against Morocco, they struggled to take their chances when it mattered most.

Jordan’s Best Case Scenario: A victory or draw against Austria in Game 1 would transform Jordan’s campaign. Algeria represents their second key game — a side they could genuinely compete with and even beat. If Jordan can pick up 4+ points from those two matches, they enter the Argentina game with genuine knockout stage ambitions. As one of 8 best third-place finishers, Jordan could also progress with a strong enough run without finishing in the top two. Their discipline, set-piece threat and Al-Taamari’s brilliance make them capable of shocking anyone on a given day.
