About The Black Stars

Ghana &
The Black Stars

Ghana — The Black Stars — return to the World Cup for the fifth time, having topped CAF Group I unbeaten with a stunning seven wins from eight matches.

Coach Otto Addo has restored confidence to Ghanaian football after the disappointment of Qatar 2022. The squad now blends Premier League quality (Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, Thomas Partey) with European top-flight experience (Inaki Williams, Mohammed Salisu, Jordan Ayew), creating arguably the strongest Ghana side since the 2010 quarter-final generation.

Ghana is one of African football’s most decorated nations — four-time AFCON champions (1963, 1965, 1978, 1982) and Africa’s last great hope at the 2010 World Cup, where they reached the quarter-final and were inches away from history before Luis Suárez’s infamous handball denied them a place in the semi-final. That generation’s spirit remains a defining touchstone for Ghanaian football.

Drawn into Group L with England, Croatia, and Panama, Ghana face a brutal but achievable path. With Mohammed Kudus operating as the creative leader, Inaki Williams’s direct running, and Thomas Partey’s midfield control, Ghana have all the components to upset elite opposition. The Round of 32 is a realistic target, with knockout-stage progression historically achievable for African nations from Group L-style draws.

Addo
Head Coach · Returned March 2024

Otto Addo, 50, is a former Ghana international and Borussia Dortmund youth coach who has been Ghana’s head coach across two separate spells. His first stint included the 2022 World Cup qualification campaign; he returned in March 2024 with a clear mandate to restore Ghanaian football’s identity after the Qatar disappointment.

Addo’s coaching philosophy combines German tactical principles (gained at Dortmund) with the technical flair Ghana have always possessed. He prioritises positional discipline, structured pressing, and quick transitions through the wide forwards — a system that maximises Kudus, Williams, and Semenyo’s individual qualities.

His CAF qualification campaign was exemplary — Ghana topped Group I unbeaten with a 7-1-0 record, conceding only 4 goals across 8 matches. The campaign included impressive wins over Mali (twice), Madagascar, and the Central African Republic. His contract runs through 2026 with extension talks expected if Ghana perform.

Playing Style

Attack &
Defence Tactics

Attacking Phase
Wide Pace & Kudus Magic
  • Ghana’s attack is built around Mohammed Kudus — the Tottenham forward operates as a free 8/10 hybrid, finding pockets of space and producing moments of individual brilliance
  • Inaki Williams provides direct running on the right channel — his pace, finishing, and ability to commit defenders create one-vs-one chaos that no Group L opponent can comfortably manage
  • Antoine Semenyo on the left flank is a Premier League-quality option — his physicality, dribbling, and goalscoring make him an elite-level wide forward at the highest level
  • Thomas Partey at 32 remains Ghana’s tactical heartbeat — his Champions League experience at Atlético Madrid and current role at Villarreal give him exactly the level needed to compete in Group L
  • Set pieces are a meaningful weapon — Partey’s delivery, combined with the aerial threats of Salisu, Djiku, and Amartey, create a major threat from corners and free-kicks
  • Counter-attacking is the primary method against elite teams — Ghana will set up to absorb pressure and release Kudus, Williams, or Semenyo into space at speed
Defensive Phase
Compact 4-3-3 Block
  • Ghana defend in a structured 4-3-3 mid-block — disciplined, narrow, designed to force the opposition wide where the full-backs can recover
  • Mohammed Salisu at 26 has emerged as Ghana’s defensive leader — his Monaco experience in Ligue 1 provides exactly the level of football needed at the World Cup
  • The double pivot of Partey and Salis Abdul Samed shields the back four — Partey’s tackling and reading of the game is crucial to disrupting opposition build-up
  • Ghana’s biggest defensive vulnerability is high-line vulnerability — when pushed into a high block, opponents can exploit the space behind Djiku and Amartey
  • Set-piece defending is a known issue — Ghana conceded multiple headers from corners during qualification and Group L opponents (England’s Kane and Stones) will target this
  • Goalkeeper Ati-Zigi has been excellent during qualification at St. Gallen — his shot-stopping and command of the area are major strengths against constant pressure

Team Analysis

Strengths &
Weaknesses

Strengths
Premier League Spine
Ghana’s squad has a Premier League core that previous generations could only dream of: Kudus (Tottenham), Semenyo (Bournemouth), Lamptey (Brighton), Ayew (Leicester). This level of top-flight experience raises the floor of this squad above any previous Ghana generation.
Mohammed Kudus — Generational Talent
Mohammed Kudus at 25 is widely considered one of African football’s brightest stars. The Tottenham forward’s combination of dribbling, finishing, and ability to play centrally as a 10 or wide as an inverted winger gives Otto Addo exceptional tactical flexibility. A genuine matchwinner.
Otto Addo’s Tactical Identity
Two years of work under Otto Addo has created a clear tactical identity. Ghana’s qualification campaign — 7 wins from 8, with only 4 goals conceded — demonstrated organisational discipline that previous generations lacked.
AFCON Pedigree & Tournament Experience
Ghana have appeared at every AFCON since 2002, providing consistent tournament-level experience. Most squad members have played in a major tournament — Olympics, AFCON, or both — and the mental preparation for World Cup pressure is therefore stronger than less-experienced rivals.
Weaknesses
Brutal Group Draw
Group L with England, Croatia, and Panama is genuinely the toughest group draw of any African qualifier. England are tournament favourites; Croatia have a Champions League-quality midfield. Ghana’s path requires beating Panama and stealing one other result against an elite opponent.
Goalscoring Question Beyond Wide Forwards
Ghana’s goalscoring during qualification was distributed across multiple players, but in the final third against organised top-tier opposition (England, Croatia), creating high-quality chances has been a recurring problem in friendlies. The strikers (Williams, Ayew) need to convert chances at unprecedented levels.
Ageing Spine in Key Positions
Jordan Ayew (34), Thomas Partey (32), Inaki Williams (32), and Mohammed Wakaso (35) are all veterans entering tournament football. The physical demands of facing England, Croatia, and Panama in summer heat may expose them as the tournament progresses.
Set-Piece Defending Vulnerability
Ghana have conceded multiple set-piece goals during recent qualification fixtures. Group L opponents — England (Kane, Stones), Croatia (Sušić, Vlašić) — have multiple aerial threats and Ghana’s set-piece defending will be examined relentlessly throughout the group stage.
Qualification History
