About Les Léopards

DR Congo &
Les Léopards

DR Congo — Les Léopards — return to the World Cup after a 50-year absence, having survived a brutal CAF play-off and the inter-confederation play-offs to claim the final African berth.

Their qualification story is one of football’s great fairy tales. After finishing CAF runners-up in their group, DR Congo beat Cameroon 1-0 in the CAF play-off semi-final and then defeated Nigeria on penalties in the final — earning the inter-confederation play-off slot. There, they defeated Jamaica 1-0 in extra time at Guadalajara to seal a 2026 berth — their first World Cup since 1974.

Coached by Sébastien Desabre, DR Congo has assembled one of the most exciting young squads in African football. Cédric Bakambu provides experienced goalscoring, while Yoane Wissa (Brentford) and Théo Bongonda offer pace and width. The midfield is anchored by Charles Pickel and Aaron Tshibola, with Chancel Mbemba leading the defence — a side built for tournament chaos rather than gentle CAF qualification rounds.

Drawn into Group K with Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan, DR Congo face perhaps the toughest group of any African nation. Realistically, Round of 32 progression would represent a historic achievement — but the inter-continental play-off journey suggests this team thrives under pressure when written off.

Desabre
Head Coach · Appointed July 2022

Sébastien Desabre, 49, is a French coach with extensive experience in African football. Before taking the DR Congo job in 2022, he managed Uganda for two years and CS Sfaxien in Tunisia. His knowledge of African football’s tactical and physical demands is unmatched among non-African coaches.

Desabre has built DR Congo’s identity around physical defensive organisation, fast transitions, and exploiting individual quality up front. His tactical flexibility — switching between 4-2-3-1 and 3-5-2 — kept opponents guessing throughout qualification. The play-off run, particularly the penalty shootout victory against Nigeria, demonstrated his squad’s mental resilience.

His CAF qualification campaign was solid rather than spectacular — but the play-off run that sealed qualification cemented his reputation. Beating Cameroon, then Nigeria on penalties, then Jamaica in extra-time required immense tactical discipline and emotional management. His contract runs through the 2026 tournament, with extension talks expected if DR Congo perform.

Playing Style

Attack &
Defence Tactics

Attacking Phase
Counter-Attack & Wide Pace
  • DR Congo are most dangerous in transition — their fast wide forwards Wissa and Bongonda exploit space when opposition push high, with Bakambu providing clinical penalty-box finishing
  • Yoane Wissa’s Premier League experience gives DR Congo a Premier League-level attacking outlet rare among African qualifiers — his pace, finishing, and one-vs-one ability are world-class
  • Bakambu remains the focal point at 34 — his hold-up play, link-up with attacking midfielders, and goalscoring instincts make him the tactical reference point for every attack
  • Set pieces are a meaningful weapon — Mbemba’s aerial dominance and Masuaku’s delivery from wide free-kicks provide a major threat in dead-ball situations
  • Charles Pickel dictates from deep midfield — his line-breaking passes find the runs of Bongonda and Wissa, and his tactical intelligence sets the speed of attacks
  • DR Congo’s secondary attacking outlet is the right channel where Akolo or Katompa can isolate full-backs in one-vs-one situations
Defensive Phase
Compact Block & Mbemba Leadership
  • DR Congo defend in a compact 4-4-2 mid-block — disciplined, narrow, designed to absorb pressure and counter at speed
  • Chancel Mbemba is the defensive leader — his pace, aerial ability, and tackling have made him a Premier League and Ligue 1 regular at the highest level. He is irreplaceable for DR Congo
  • Tuanzebe and Mbemba form a quality centre-back pairing — both Premier League experienced, with Tuanzebe’s recovery pace covering the higher-line risk
  • DR Congo’s defensive vulnerability is on the flanks — Masuaku and Kalulu are aggressive attackers but can be exposed by intelligent wide overloads
  • Goalkeeper Mpasi has been excellent during qualification — saving the decisive penalties against Nigeria — but lacks experience at elite level
  • Set-piece defending against Portugal and Colombia will be a major test — both teams have multiple aerial threats and DR Congo’s smaller-frame midfielders can be exploited

Team Analysis

Strengths &
Weaknesses

Strengths
Mental Resilience — Play-off Forged
DR Congo’s qualification path was unimaginable: beat Cameroon, beat Nigeria on penalties, beat Jamaica in extra-time. Few teams arrive at the World Cup with this level of pressure-tested mental resilience. They know how to win must-win matches under tournament conditions.
Wissa & Bakambu — Goal Threat
Yoane Wissa is a Premier League scorer at Brentford and one of the most underrated attackers in European football. Combined with Bakambu’s experience and Bongonda’s pace, DR Congo have a forward unit capable of scoring against any defence.
Mbemba — Elite Defensive Leader
Chancel Mbemba has been a top-five league regular for nearly a decade — at Newcastle, Anderlecht, Porto, Marseille, and Lille. His leadership, defensive ability, and aerial dominance make him the spine of any DR Congo defensive plan.
Desabre’s Tactical Adaptability
Sébastien Desabre’s ability to switch formations and game-plans based on opposition has been the hallmark of qualification. Against teams with elite quality (Portugal, Colombia), DR Congo will need this flexibility — and their coach has shown he can deliver it.
Weaknesses
Brutal Group Draw
Group K with Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan is genuinely the toughest African draw of the tournament. Portugal are top-six contenders with Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, and Bruno Fernandes; Colombia have James and Luis Díaz. DR Congo’s path requires beating Uzbekistan and stealing points elsewhere.
Squad Depth Issues
DR Congo’s starting XI is competitive — but the depth drops sharply. An injury to Mbemba, Wissa, or Pickel would significantly reduce their tournament ceiling. The bench lacks the experience of European tournament-tested teams.
Limited Elite-Level Experience
Beyond Mbemba, Wissa, and a handful of others, the squad has limited experience playing at major tournament level. The mental pressure of a World Cup group match against Portugal or Colombia is a different intensity from CAF qualification.
Goalkeeper Question
Mpasi has been excellent but is a Ligue 2-level goalkeeper. Against the elite ball-strikers in Group K (Bruno Fernandes, James Rodríguez), DR Congo may need a level of goalkeeping performance that hasn’t yet been tested at this stage.
Qualification History

DR Congo to push for 3rd place — historic effort vs Group K

Group K is brutal. Portugal heavy favourites for first; Colombia for second. DR Congo’s realistic target is third place via a Uzbekistan win and an upset draw against Colombia. Their inter-continental play-off mentality could deliver one shocking result.
