Live Baccarat Guide: Rules, Payouts and House Edge Explained

Last updated:

Baccarat is the most popular live casino game in Malaysia and across Asia. It looks complicated at first, but you only make one decision per hand. This guide from Nova88 Malaysia explains card values, the automatic drawing rules, what each bet pays, the real house edge and how No Commission tables change the maths.

Key takeaways

  • You bet on Banker, Player or Tie; the dealer follows fixed drawing rules, so there are no decisions after betting.
  • Cards count Ace = 1, 2–9 at face value, 10 and picture cards = 0; only the last digit of the total counts.
  • With eight decks, Banker has a house edge of about 1.06% (after 5% commission), Player 1.24% and Tie at 8:1 about 14.4%.
  • No Commission (Super 6) tables pay Banker 1:1 but only half on a winning six, raising the Banker edge to about 1.46%.
  • Roadmaps and streaks do not predict the next hand; stake control matters more than any pattern.

What is live baccarat?

Baccarat is a card game in which two hands, called Player and Banker, are dealt and compared. The hand with a total closest to 9 wins. You are not playing either hand yourself: you simply bet on which hand will win, or that they will tie. In live baccarat, a real dealer deals from a shoe of cards in a studio, and the result is streamed to your screen in real time.

The game’s popularity in Malaysia comes from its pace, its simplicity and its relatively low house edge on the main bets. You will find many baccarat tables in the Nova88 live casino, from providers such as Evolution, SA Gaming, AE Sexy, Dream Gaming and AllBet.

Despite the names, “Banker” does not mean the casino and “Player” does not mean you. They are just labels for the two hands on the table.

Card values and how totals work

CardValue
Ace1
2 to 9Face value
10, Jack, Queen, King0

Only the last digit of a hand’s total counts. A 7 and an 8 make 15, so the hand is worth 5. A King and a 9 make 9. A hand can never be worth more than 9.

Quick examples: 6 + 4 = 10 β†’ 0 (called “baccarat”). 9 + Queen = 9. 5 + 8 = 13 β†’ 3. Ace + 7 = 8.

A two-card total of 8 or 9 is called a natural. If either hand has a natural, both hands stand and the round is decided immediately.

The third-card drawing rules

Each hand receives two cards. Whether a third card is drawn follows strict rules that the dealer applies automatically. You never need to memorise them to play, but knowing them helps you understand what happens on screen.

Player hand

Player’s two-card totalAction
0 – 5Draws a third card
6 – 7Stands
8 – 9Natural: both hands stand

Banker hand

If the Player stands, the Banker draws on 0–5 and stands on 6–7. If the Player drew a third card, the Banker’s action depends on its own total and the value of the Player’s third card:

Banker totalBanker draws if Player’s third card is
0 – 2Any card (always draws)
3Anything except 8
42 to 7
54 to 7
66 or 7
7Never draws (stands)

These rules give the Banker hand a small statistical advantage, which is why the casino charges a commission on Banker wins.

Main bets, payouts and house edge

The figures below assume an eight-deck shoe, the most common format in live casinos.

BetProbability of winningTypical payoutHouse edge
Banker45.86%0.95:1 (5% commission)About 1.06%
Player44.62%1:1About 1.24%
Tie9.52%8:1About 14.36%
Tie (some tables)9.52%9:1About 4.84%

When the result is a tie, Banker and Player bets are normally returned (a push). That is why the Banker and Player win probabilities add up to less than 100%.

Worked example: RM100 on Banker wins. You receive RM100 Γ— 0.95 = RM95 profit plus your RM100 stake, total RM195. RM100 on Player wins: RM100 profit plus stake, total RM200. RM100 on Tie at 8:1 wins: RM800 profit plus stake, total RM900.

No Commission (Super 6) baccarat explained

Many live studios offer No Commission baccarat. Instead of taking 5% from every Banker win, these tables pay Banker at 1:1, except when the Banker wins with a total of 6, which pays only 1:2 (half the stake as profit).

Table typeBanker win paysBanker win with 6Banker house edge
Standard (commission)0.95:10.95:1About 1.06%
No Commission / Super 61:11:2About 1.46%

No Commission tables feel simpler because payouts are round numbers, but the Banker bet is slightly more expensive in the long run. The Player bet is usually unchanged at 1:1. Some tables also offer a separate “Super 6” side bet on the Banker winning with six, which is covered in our upcoming side-bets guide.

Asian-focused studios often run many tables in parallel with a lobby showing every table’s roadmap, which makes it easy to switch tables. That convenience is useful, but remember that the odds are the same at every table using the same rules.

Pace matters: estimating your cost per hour

A low house edge does not mean a low cost if you play many hands quickly. Speed tables can deal far more hands per hour than classic tables.

Average cost β‰ˆ hands per hour Γ— stake per hand Γ— house edge

Example: 60 hands per hour Γ— RM20 on Banker Γ— 1.06% β‰ˆ RM12.70 per hour on average. The same play on Tie at 14.36% would average about RM172 per hour.

Real sessions swing far above and below these averages, but the calculation is a helpful reality check. Our bankroll management guide explains how to set a budget and unit size, and the same principles work for casino sessions.

Streaks, roadmaps and betting systems

Every baccarat table shows a results history, and many players follow streaks such as “Banker has won five in a row” or alternating “chops”. Card games dealt from a shoe are not perfectly independent, because used cards change what remains. With eight decks and a cut card, though, this effect is far too small to give a practical edge on the main bets.

  • Streak following does not change the probabilities of the next hand.
  • Martingale (doubling after losses) can wipe out a budget in one long losing run; see the maths in our roulette patterns guide.
  • Flat stakes keep results predictable and sessions longer.

We will cover how to read baccarat roadmaps, and why they are a record rather than a forecast, in a dedicated guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best bet in baccarat?

Banker has the lowest house edge, about 1.06% on standard tables after the 5% commission. Player is close behind at about 1.24%.

Why does the Banker bet pay commission?

The drawing rules give the Banker hand a slight advantage, so casinos charge a 5% commission on Banker wins to keep their edge.

What happens to Banker and Player bets on a tie?

On most tables, Banker and Player bets are returned when the hand is a tie.

Is the Tie bet worth it?

At 8:1 the Tie has a house edge of about 14.4%, far higher than the main bets. Some tables pay 9:1, which lowers the edge to about 4.8%.

What is No Commission baccarat?

A version where Banker wins pay 1:1 instead of 0.95:1, except a Banker win with a total of six, which pays 1:2. The Banker house edge rises to about 1.46%.

Do I need to learn the drawing rules?

No. The dealer applies them automatically. Knowing them simply helps you follow each hand.

Where can I play live baccarat in Malaysia?

Live baccarat tables from several providers are available in the live casino at Nova88. Check your local laws and eligibility first.

Responsible gaming. Casino games carry a real risk of financial loss, and results are random. Set a budget before you play, never chase losses, and take regular breaks. Read the Nova88 responsible gaming policy for tools and support. You must be of legal age and permitted to gamble where you live.

Editorial note: payouts, house edge and RTP figures are typical or provider-published values for education only. Always check the rules and paytable of the exact game or table you play.
