NBA Futures and Win Totals: How Season-Long Basketball Bets Work
An NBA regular season runs from October to April, with 82 games per team before the play-in and playoffs. Futures markets let you bet on how that whole journey ends. This Nova88 Malaysia guide explains championship and conference odds, win totals, award markets and how to manage bets that stay open for months.
Key takeaways
- Futures are season-long bets: champion, conference winner, division winner, win totals and individual awards.
- Win totals ask whether a team will win more or fewer regular-season games than a line, out of 82.
- Most major awards, including MVP, require players to meet a 65-game eligibility threshold, with limited exceptions.
- Futures carry larger margins than single games and tie up money for months, so stakes should be small.
- Injuries, trades and load management move futures prices more than any single result.
What are NBA futures?
A futures bet is a wager on an outcome that will be decided weeks or months from now rather than in a single game. In the NBA, that includes who wins the championship, which teams win each conference and division, how many games a team wins in the regular season, and who wins individual awards such as Most Valuable Player.
Futures reward a long-term view of team quality, depth, health and schedule. They sit alongside single-game markets such as spreads and totals, which we explain in our basketball Asian Handicap guide, and post-season markets covered in our NBA playoffs guide. All are available in the Nova88 sportsbook.
Futures are also a good way to follow a whole season with a single, considered view rather than many small nightly bets. One well-researched position on a team you believe is underrated can be more interesting, and far less time-consuming, than betting every game.
How the NBA season is structured
| Phase | When | Why it matters for futures |
|---|---|---|
| Regular season | Late October to mid-April | 82 games per team decide win totals, seeding and awards |
| NBA Cup (in-season tournament) | Group games in November, knockouts in December | Group games count in the standings; the Cup final does not |
| Trade deadline | Usually February | Rosters can change sharply and move prices |
| Play-in tournament | Mid-April | Seeds 7 to 10 in each conference fight for the final playoff places |
| Playoffs | Mid-April to June | Best-of-seven series decide conference winners and the champion |
The main NBA futures markets
| Market | Wins if | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Championship winner | Your team wins the NBA Finals | Settles in June |
| Conference winner | Your team wins the Eastern or Western Conference finals | Settles in late May or early June |
| Division winner | Your team finishes top of its division | Regular season only |
| Regular-season win total | Your team wins over or under a set number of games | Out of 82 games |
| Make / miss playoffs | Your team does or does not reach the playoffs | Check whether play-in losers count as “missed” |
| Individual awards | MVP, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player, Sixth Man, Most Improved, Coach of the Year | Decided by media voting after the regular season |
Regular-season win totals explained
A win total sets a line, for example 47.5 wins, and you bet Over or Under. Over wins if the team wins 48 or more of its 82 regular-season games. Some sportsbooks use whole-number lines such as 47, where exactly 47 wins is a push and stakes are refunded.
Quick maths: a line of 47.5 implies a winning percentage of about 58% (47.5 ÷ 82). To judge it, estimate the team’s average chance of winning each game, multiply by 82 and compare. A team you rate as a 61% side projects to about 50 wins, which would lean Over.
Win totals depend heavily on health and on whether a team keeps competing all season. Contenders sometimes rest stars late in the season once their seeding is secure, and rebuilding teams may focus on young players, both of which can affect late-season results.
Award markets and the 65-game rule
Under the current collective bargaining agreement, players must generally appear in at least 65 games (with a minimum number of minutes in each) to be eligible for MVP and most other major individual awards, with limited exceptions for certain injuries and short appearances. That rule has made availability a central part of award betting.
| Award | What voters tend to reward | Key risk |
|---|---|---|
| Most Valuable Player | Elite production on a winning team | Missing games and falling below 65 |
| Rookie of the Year | Volume and role on court | Minutes restrictions or a crowded rotation |
| Defensive Player of the Year | Defensive impact and team defensive rating | Narratives shift quickly |
| Sixth Man of the Year | Scoring off the bench | Promotion to the starting line-up |
Always read award market rules on void conditions, dead heats and what happens if a player is ruled ineligible.
Reading futures odds and margins
Convert each team’s decimal odds to implied probability with 1 ÷ odds. Add the whole market together and you will usually see a total well above 100%, sometimes 120% or more. That excess is the margin, and it is much larger than in single-game markets.
| Team (illustrative) | Championship odds | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|
| Favourite | 3.50 | 28.6% |
| Second favourite | 5.00 | 20.0% |
| Contender | 8.00 | 12.5% |
| Outsider | 21.00 | 4.8% |
Because the margin is spread across many teams, value is easiest to find when you have a well-founded view that differs from the market, such as an underrated team with strong underlying numbers early in the season.
When to place NBA futures bets
- Pre-season: longest prices but the most uncertainty about health and rotations.
- First month: early records can be misleading; look at point differential and efficiency, not just wins.
- Around the trade deadline: roster changes can transform a contender’s price overnight.
- After the All-Star break: seeding battles and rest patterns become clearer.
Our closing line value guide explains how to measure whether the prices you take are better than later market prices.
A practical approach many bettors use is to place small positions early where they hold a strong view, then wait for at least 15 to 20 games of data before adding anything further. By then, efficiency numbers start to stabilise and you can see whether your original reasoning holds up.
Managing bets that stay open for months
Futures tie up money for a long time, so treat them as a small, separate part of your budget. Decide in advance how you would handle a position whose price shortens sharply: hold it, use the cash-out feature where offered, or hedge with a later bet on a rival. Writing down that plan in advance prevents emotional decisions mid-season.
Keep stakes modest, as explained in our bankroll management guide, and avoid stacking several futures that depend on the same assumption, such as one star staying healthy.
Common NBA futures mistakes
- Ignoring the margin on long lists of teams or players.
- Overreacting to the first two weeks of results.
- Forgetting the 65-game rule when backing injury-prone award candidates.
- Not checking market rules for play-in outcomes, pushes and dead heats.
- Staking too much on long shots because the potential return looks exciting.

Frequently asked questions
What is an NBA win total bet?
A bet on whether a team wins more or fewer regular-season games than a set line, out of its 82 games.
What happens if a team lands exactly on a whole-number win total?
On a whole-number line, landing exactly on the number is usually a push and stakes are refunded. Half-point lines cannot push.
What is the NBA 65-game rule?
Players generally need to appear in at least 65 regular-season games, with minimum minutes, to be eligible for MVP and most major awards, with limited exceptions.
Do NBA Cup games count in win totals?
NBA Cup group and knockout games count in the regular-season standings, but the Cup championship game does not.
When is the best time to bet NBA futures?
Pre-season offers longer prices with more uncertainty. Later in the season you have better information but shorter prices.
Do NBA futures include the play-in tournament?
Play-in games decide the final playoff places but are not regular-season games, so they do not count towards win totals. Check each make-the-playoffs market for how play-in results are treated.
Where can I bet NBA futures in Malaysia?
